February 28, 2008

The winds of change have been sweeping through Maccabi Football WA. The members of this year’s committee are almost entirely different to that of last year (though we have seen the return of some familiar faces) and this year will see a rather different set of coaches at the leadership of the club’s twenty or so teams.

Most notably, the committee has appointed a new and very different coach for the Seniors’ First Team. Having recently arrived with her boyfriend from Exeter in England, the young Samantha Smith has taken over the helm as senior’s coach. She is well-qualified for the job, having a Level 3 UEFA coaching license and she brings with her a great deal of coaching experience and knowledge of the game as she is not only a coach but a referee and accomplished player herself. Let’s hope she will deploy strict English discipline and a rigorous training regime to get the First Team ready and gelling as a unit for the challenging season in the premier league that awaits them! We would like to thank Mark Caplin for once again standing in as an interim coach, assisting this year’s Reserves coach Steve Selwyn with the pre-season training of the Seniors’ teams.

The Under 18s will also be benefiting from English football expertise, with the instatement of Warren Grieve as their coach for the season. Warren also has a UEFA Level 3 coaching badge and has worked for many years as a coach and as a manager of youth soccer academies and Olympic development programmes in both England and the USA.

The committee is also pleased to announce that they have once again secured Investec as the major sponsor for the senior teams.

Wishing all of our coaches players and their families all the best for the season ahead,

Terence Fuhr on behalf of the Maccabi Soccer Committee.
